SHAPING A NEW TOMORROW

As humans we have two basic needs/rights: food and shelter. In the 1970’s the first “food banks” were established as a temporary fix to feed the hungry. Fifty year later, matters have worsened and the need for food programs has exploded.

Did you know that Canada has 61,000 food programs? There are 15,344 big box and corner grocery stores. That is an astonishing one grocery store for every four food programs! The 61,000 food insecurity organizations are: food banks, soup kitchens, school programs, and homeless shelters, serving 6.7 million Canadians 10 million meals per year.

There is a huge demand for food programs in Muskoka and we are grateful for the many options available here because it is crucial. The Ontario Living Wage is $45,000 per household. The median household income in Muskoka is 40% below the living wage. That means half of the households in Muskoka are struggling to live on an income of less than $27,000 annually.

You can help by supporting Muskoka businesses that pay a living wage

CHALLENGING THE CHAMPIONS

Thanks to our Champions, the Willis’, the “Peter and Eve Willis Bursary Fund” has been set up through Muskoka Community Foundation (MCF).  Peter and Eve Willis have worked with the MCF to establish this fund which means that anyone reading this who wishes to help build the fund can do so.

Education empowers people and families to make positive changes in their lives.  The Willis Bursary will provide funding for District of Muskoka students to enable them to continue with their education and become certified tradespeople. We expect most candidates will come from the Muskoka high schools and all these education centres are very supportive, though candidates could also consist of mature students within the District of Muskoka.  This program incorporates a college education with work experience to give graduates a solid start in a trade.
